the face of christ
This picture spoke to me this week.
I was working on a project for Dan that involved hunting on the internet for free images to be used in a presentation during our Good Friday service at church. I really enjoy this sort of thing. Google images is the best!
I happened on this one and was really moved by it’s artistry. It appears to be some sort of graphic design of Christ’s face. The whispy hair is obviously what grabbed me first, it appears wind blown, unkempt, as if it’s been exposed to harsh elements for a very long day. Then I noticed the crown of thorns. So sharp, we’ve all heard descriptions of the thorns haven’t we? Piercing, unforgiving. God created them as a plant’s own defense system. He only knew upon creating them they would be used to pierce the brow of His only Son. Then I noticed the open mouth. Dry, thirsty, expelling breath that is life giving, to His own body, and to mine. The eyes are closed, perhaps at this point they are resigned to the “cup” that He had to drink on this day. Ready to see His Father again, ready to let go of a sin-swept world if only for a short time for reprieve. Although He has never let go of this place. Ever.
This is a week to ponder these things. We don’t have to reserve these thoughts to Holy week alone, but don’t we all do that? All of a sudden, each year, Easter is upon us. We think to ourselves (subconsciously) “Oh yeah....Easter. My Savior died for me, on a cross....that’s right. He suffered on my behalf. I am so thankful.” How much do we think on these things throughout the year? If I’m being honest, not enough.
He is so kind. His character is the kindest we could ever imagine. Imagine this face, opening His eyes, turning His head and looking right at you. The kindness would overwhelm you. It’s His kindness that kept Him there that day, It’s His kindness that leads us to repent.
I’m imagining the voice right now. Someday we’ll hear His sweet song first hand. While He tarries on our life’s end, what can we do for Him? What can I do for You?
